I just want to say congratulations to each and every one of us willing to look at our situations with a more rational, realistic sense. Even if we do not stay gamble free, the fact that we are participating on this site, tells us that we are doing it with hopefully a much clearer picture of the pitfalls ahead of us. I like that most don’t judge others actions with disdain, but with understanding that we have all been there. I personally find it reassuring that I am not the only one who has been through the struggles, although I am sorry than anybody has to go through them at all.
Hopefully with some positive words of encouragement, and the true relation to the issue, we can get past most of what has harmed us in the past. I have found much greater peace of mind working on GT forums, and in chat, than I have received through therapy and counseling. Although I believe those are helpful, there is a disconnect to the situation at hand.
Happy new year to all, and do your best to make it a better year. I know I will!! -

How fortunate we are to have a support system like GT!
You are right, we are all here trying to overcome, and that in itself deserves a pat on the back.
Life isn’t perfect, but being gamble free makes things a whole lot easier to deal with. Having a clear mind gives us the clarity to make decisions that will help, not harm.
I wish you all the best for the coming year.

Very lovely post Johnny!
During my time here at GT which goes back to 2007, I have had opportunity to meet a lot of people who paid a heavy price to this addiction. It never ceases to amaze me how people who can be down and hurting will reach out to lift another up. Thanks for your contributions Johnny. Thanks to all who are here supporting. Laura

Hi Johnny ,
That’s a great post – you are right we get so much support from each other on here – even when people feel lost and desperate they are somehow able to reach out and support others.
You are a person who makes an effort to support many others on here – I know it is often hard to get around to posting or even find find the words, but a simple word of encouragement can mean so much so thank you for that.
Hope to see you in chat soon. -

The year has started out well. I have a lot of hope for having the best year of my life. Ironically, it is the first New Year I have started out not gambling, and having no plans to. I hope to keep the eye on the prize, today is a good day!

Hi Laura,
I want to thank you for your contributions as well. Every time I am on here you are too, it seems. That tells me you are a selfless individual. Struggles are all too real, supporting others through the tough times is admirable. I wish you the best for your continued recovery. -

IDI,
As in my post to Laura, you are a big reason I keep coming back. I want to learn from your experiences, and I hopefully help with mine. I am definitely not perfect, but in my case, the lack of self esteem is a major trigger. I do feel I can make a difference for somebody. Once again, the fact the we are still here, and reading posts, and participating….are priceless learning experiences.
Good Luck in the new year. Thank you for your kind words. -

Hi Jonnhy ,
Your lovely post on my thread made a difference today .
It lifted me .
I am so glad u came to chat – it was a busy group – shame there isn’t another now – the groups used to be much better – more frequent – but they changed – u never get long enough to chat when there is a big number anymoreI get that lack of self esteem Johnny – I think many of us have it – a feeling of not being good enough – or less than others.
Maybe a big win would make us equal ?
We all know how that one works out .Keep strong – lets beat this horrible addiction .

I continue to be impressed by your effort to beat the cycle. You are an inspiration, and If I can be so forward, I am very proud of you. When we met, you were having issues stopping, and you have since done very well. Even if we slip, it doesn’t mean we have to fall. Keep trying, Keep the faith. You are doing really well and should be very proud of yourself!

I like to respond to this thread! I think it is important for us all to realize we are making progress, slow but sure. I had a car issue today $1000 repair (aarrgghh)…I called my wife who is out of town, and she got nervous right away because financial stress has always been one of my triggers… But for once, I have the money on hand to fix it. It won’t leave me with much, but my ??normal?? brain is over riding my ??gambling?? brain for once, which I think is a really good sign. I am recognizing the damage I can cause if I lose money right now, and it isn’t going to happen… I am very proud of myself right now. Silly to be proud of something so small, but in the the scheme of things it is huge!!!

Charles always talks in groups about how unexpected bills are are really annoying but no longer a crisis when we are not gambling.
I am Proud of you too- u averted a crisis !
